Biography

Jim is a lifelong learner and educator, with over 10 years of experience in teaching, tutoring and coaching. He brings the knowledge and experience of both academic content and test taking strategy to aid students in their life and career goals. In addition to tutoring test prep, Jim also teaches High School Math. The son of a Cuban immigrant, Jim began tutoring and mentoring at a young age as the oldest of 3 brothers. Jim currently only works with students remotely. While he grew up in Massachusetts, he currently lives with his wife Leah, and their two cats, in the hilly farmland of Starks, Maine. They are lucky to live in an area rich with wildlife and plenty of hiking.

Jim works with a broad range of students, from 4th grade test prep to graduate students needing help. Jim tutors both academic subjects and many of the popular tests: ISEE, SSAT, SAT, ACT, and GRE to name a few. Jim has worked with many types of learners, from diligent perfectionists to students that need some confidence and positive reinforcement. Jim believes in building up through building confidence, rather than negative reinforcement.

Jim has an easy-going, affable style as a tutor and a person. He believes preparation is an important step in building confidence and helping any student learn. As such, he helps each student prepare for their subject to face whatever tests or academic trials lie ahead. Math is one of his favorite topics because there are often multiple ways of solving a problem. He tries to bring this same optimism and outlook to his students. Jim also uses practical and academic business experience to tutor financial accounting, a subject many students have to take in college, but find challenging.

Finally, Jim and Leah love to travel and were even married in Cortona, Italy (fans of Under the Tuscan Sun may recognize the name). They also enjoy gardening, especially because Leah is an amazing cook and it provides further inspiration. Jim volunteers in his free time, helping adult English learners practice English and coaching youth baseball.
