The SSAT, like most standardized tests, offers testing accommodations for students taking the test with disabilities. In this post, weโll tell you everything you need to know about SSAT testing accommodations. Accommodations are offered for a variety of reasons, but commonly for any student with an identified disabling condition or impairment which substantially limits her or his ability to perform a major life activity. The presence of testing accommodations is not signaled on the score report submitted to schools. The process takes some time for EMA to review, so make sure to get your submission in sooner rather than later. Make sure that any accommodations, like extra time, are approved BEFORE registering for any SSAT test.
SSAT Test Modes and Accommodations
The SSAT is now offered in multiple test modes. There may be slightly different rules for accommodations based on the type of test you are taking:
Paper-Based SSAT
- This is the traditional testing method.
- Make sure accommodations are approved with your testing consultant or testing administrator prior to taking the test.
- However, due to COVID-19, there may be fewer paper administrations available this testing season.
Computer-Based SSAT at Prometric Testing Center
- Beginning in the 2020-2021 testing season, EMA has partnered with Prometric to offer in-person computer testing locations across the US and Canada.
- Some accommodations may be unnecessary when taking the test online.
- Examples include (but are not limited to) the use of a computer to write the essay, large-print materials, or the ability to answer directly in your test book.
Computer-Based SSAT at Home
- With coronavirus pandemic in effect, the timing seems perfect for the SSAT to finally introduce an online at-home testing option.
SSAT Testing Accommodation Basics
Any student, or their parent, that feels they may be eligible to receive SSAT testing accommodations is encouraged to submit an application. Accommodations are designed to level the testing access for students with disabilities. Keep in mind that EMA can take up to two weeks to process to initial request for accommodations. It is very important that you make sure that any testing accommodations are approved BEFORE registering for any SSAT test. If you register before your accommodations are approved, you may not be eligible for the accommodations on that test day. Students will only need approval for SSAT testing accommodations once per testing season, and approvals will expire on July 31. As mentioned above, scores are not โFlaggedโ as having accommodations, which means that SSAT score reports do not notify schools of testing accommodations.
